METERS, MONITORS, & DETECTORS
Gauss Master - Gauss Meter
The Gauss Master is the most widely utilized EMF (Electromagnetic Field) detector by paranormal investigators and "ghost hunters". The Gauss Master is a hand-held detector that offers an easy to read gauge, unique built-in audio signal and auto shut-off feature. It simple to use and is a great way to pick up electronic and magnetic fields. The theory is that when ghosts or spirits are present, they disrupt the electromagnetic fields. The Gauss Master will detect these disruptions.
The Gauss Master is a great EMF detector for beginning "ghost hunters", because of the fact that it is very affordable. It sells for around $40. It displays readings from 0.1 mG to 10 mG cycling between 50 Hz to 60 Hz. (2 mode operation). The downside of this meter is that it is calibrated to pick up only signals cycling between 50-60 Hz and the fact that it automatically powers itself down after 10 minutes. The Gauss Master runs on a 9V battery.
CellSensor - RF Sensor and Gauss Meter
The CellSensor is a dual-use meter featuring both cell phone frequency RF measurement (calibrated around 835 MHz) as well as a single-axis EMF Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) Gauss meter (calibrated around 50-60 Hz fields). The RF meter measures the intensity of radiation from cellular as well as GSM mobile phones and is calibrated at 835 MHz (with an accuracy of ±3dB). The CellSensor comes with a remote probe with a 2 foot extension cord allowing the user extended reach to any area while keeping an eye on field strength. It features two analog scales: NORMAL sensitivity (0-5 mG) and HIGH Sensitivity (0-50 mG) with a relatively flat frequency response curve. Both the RF and Gauss meter provide audio sound (with volume control) and a large flashing light which is great for low-light conditions. The sound and light correspond to field strength.
The downside of this meter is that it will sometimes not zero properly. The CellSensor sells for around $40.00.
C.E.M. DT-8810 Infrared Thermometer
The C.E.M. DT-8810 Non-Contact I/R Thermometer has a laser pointer which can be used for improved aim. The DT-8810 has a very fast sampling time and has a measuring range of -4°F to 518°F (-20°C to 270°C), with an accuracy of +/- 2% of reading. Its field of view is Narrow 8:1 (at 8" distance, measure 1"target). The DT-8810 has a fixed emissivity (0.95) that covers 90% of surface applications.
A red trigger-style button is used for capturing temperatures. On the front of this I/R thermometer are four small buttons, one red button for turning the laser on or off, two blue buttons in the center for switching between Fahrenheit and Celsius readings, and a yellow button for turning on a backlight for the display. The backlight is vital for viewing temperature readings during the low-light conditions of "ghost hunting" investigations. The DT-8810 also has a nice 'auto-hold' feature which is activated by releasing the temperature measuring trigger. The DT-8810 is powered by one 9V battery.
CAMERAS
Sony CyberShot DSC-V3 Digital Camera
The Sony CyberShot DSC-V3 has a large 2.5" LCD, and has a 7.2 megapixel image sensor. The camera uses Compact Flash and Memory Stick slots for storage, and stores its images as JPEG, TIFF and RAW file outputs. The DSC-V3 is a camera that will please amateur and pro photographers alike. One great thing for any ghost hunter is that this camera has the ability to take still photos with the Sony NightShot Infrared feature.
VIDEO EQUIPMENT & PERIPHERALS
Sony DCR-HC40 Mini DV Handycam
The DCR-HC40 Mini DV Handycam has an ultra-compact design. It features a F1.8, 10X optical zoom Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens. The lens has a focal range of 3.2 - 32 mm (equivalent to 46 - 460 mm for video and 38 - 380 mm for stills). If further zooming is necessary the DCR-HC40 also sports a 120x digital zoom. The lens is threaded and can use 25 mm accessories.
The DCR-HC40 features a NightShot Plus™ infrared recording (which actually shoots color video under low-light conditions) and Super Nightshot Plus™, which uses a slower shutter speed to bring in more light. The Color Slow Shutter feature doesn't use infrared light like the Nightshot™ modes, but it does use a slow shutter speed.
Other features include the electronic Super SteadyShot™ system, to help reduce camera shake, USB streaming (which allows the video camera to be used as a webcam), and digital still image capturing via the 1.0 Megapixel Advanced HAD imaging chip onto MemoryStick DUO media.
AUDIO EQUIPMENT
Sony TCM-200DV Cassette Recorder
Sony's TCM-200DV two-channel, one track cassette comes installed with double recording time and voice operated recording. The double recording time gives you the option of recording at a standard speed, or at half the standard speed, essentially giving you double the recording space. With voice operated record, you no longer have to worry about constantly shutting off and switching on the record button; with the first hint of sound, the TCM-200DV will begin recording. The Sony-Matic automatic recording level control keeps recordings at one constant level. Play-back editing or transcribing becomes more useful with this feature. The TCM-200DV comes equipped with an internal microphone and an external mic jack.
An essential playback feature is the playback speed control. With this adjustment, you can adjust the speed between thirty percent of normal and negative fifteen percent of normal. This is a great tool for listening back to EVP's. The recorder also has a L/R monaural earphone jack.
There are two options in powering this recorder. The first is an optional AC adaptor. If batteries are more useful, use the required two AA batteries; these batteries will run for up to twenty-five hours. With the LED battery level indicator you can be watchful of remaining battery time. With automatic shut-off, you can be assured that you will not be wasting batteries needlessly. Other features include: clear voice recording system, cue and review, pause switch, stop/pause release function.
Olympus W-10 Digital Voice Recorder
The Olympus W-10 is great for capturing EVP's (Electronic Voice Phenomena). The W-10 can record up to 180 minutes of audio. You can select between three different recording modes (HQ, SP, and LP). The W-10 even has a built-in digital camera which captures digital images with a 0.3 Mega pixel CMOS sensor. The pictures have a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. Visual indexing allows you to display an image while playing audio related to that image.
The W-10's LCD panel shows recording time remaining, sound quality, folder name, and other non-image related information. You can quickly transfer audio and image files with the Auto-Connect USB cable to your PC, where you can display them, store them, add descriptions and narration to the images, or even play them back in a slide show via the included Voice Album Software.
The W-10 makes it easy to manage your audio and image files as well. With two folders devoted to your audio files, each capable of storing up to 100 messages apiece, and a dedicated folder for image files that can hold up to 250 pictures, organizing and locating those important files is simple. You can even move files between folders, or erase a single file or entire folder. The W-10 has a built-in headphone jack and runs on two AAA batteries.
