History of Cemetery:

This cemetery which is located on a remote bluff on the eastern side of Loon Lake, is also known to many as "The Witches Graveyard." The cemetery is supposedly home to at least two local witches. One witch was Clarinda Allen who who died in 1885, and the second witch was Mary Jane Twiliger, who was reportedly beheaded in 1881, by the citizens of Petersburg, Minnesota, at the young age of eighteen.

Many of the grave sites in the cemetery have been vandalized and out of the approximately eighteen gravestones that remain standing, most are covered up by natural overgrowth.

Loon Lake Cemetery

One of the vandalized grave sites in the cemetery. This grave is located by a large pine tree, and is believed to be the grave site of Mary Jane Twiliger, who was reported to have been a witch and was beheaded at the age of eighteen. Her tombstone once read,

"My friends beware as you pass by
As you are now, so once was I,
As I am now, so you must be,
Prepare yourself to follow me."

Update (Sep. 16, 2005):
Brad sent us the following e-mail, " Your photo of the grave of Mary Jane at Loon Lake Cemetery is the incorrect grave.  The back side of that grave reads the death date as June 7, 1909.  This, I believe, was her mother.  The last name is also Terwilegar.  Was misspelled on the memorial.  Mary Jane\'s grave is in a big circle of picker bushes near the back in the center."
